How Phentermine Works

Phentermine is a prescription drug known to act on the neurotransmitters in the brain, resulting in a loss of appetite. When phentermine is taken it causes a person to eat less and thus lose weight relative to their reduced daily calorie consumption.

The primary neurotransmitters released by phentermine include norepinephrine, dopamine and adrenaline (epinephrine).  These neurotransmitters are collectively known as catecholamines which signal the flight or fight response within the body.  As a result of the fight or flight response, your blood pressure and heart rate increase and appetite is reduced.

Phentermine also affects levels of the hormone leptin within the brain.  Phentermine is believed to increase the body’s levels of leptin, which is a chemical that signals satiety (fullness).  It is also believed that such neurotransmitters are responsible for reducing the levels of the chemical messenger known as neuropeptide Y. Neuropeptide Y stimulates the eating response and decreases the energy expenditure of the body, allowing fat to be stored away.

How Phentermine Works

A neurotransmitter is a chemical in your brain and nervous system.  They act as signals or messengers, relaying information via chemical and electrical messages between the different nerve cells of the brain.  People can have normally low levels of neurotransmitters, resulting in a variety of conditions, particularly anxiety, depression, obesity and panic attacks, among others.  There are medications that act on the various parts of the brain and on different parts of the brain, causing effects based on the neurotransmitter and the area of the brain affected.

There are dozens of medications that act on the various neurotransmitters. In the case of phentermine, it is the effect of the drug on norepinephrine (among others), which acts on the hypothalamus to control appetite.  The drug tricks your brain into thinking the norepinephrine is a natural response and acts accordingly.  Phentermine can give the individual a better sense of positive energy so that they are more likely to be more active.

Phentermine has undergone a great many scientific studies lately which prove its effectiveness as a weight loss medication.  Double blind studies have shown actual weight loss in individuals taking the phentermine as opposed to those taking the placebo.  In addition to its weight loss capabilities, it has been found that phentermine is a powerful antioxidant.  An antioxidant is a medication that blocks the effects of aging and controls the growth of cancer cells.  Phentermine contains “catechin polyphenols” which increase the levels of fat oxidations. In addition, it prevents the body from accumulating fatty deposits as well.  Phentermine raises your body’s metabolic rate so you burn calories faster.  All in all, phentermine can safely help you reduce weight with only a few or no side effects.  It should be taken alone and not in combination with other drugs or herbal supplements for weight loss. Phentermine should only be taken under supervision of your doctor.
