Iodine Deficiency Linked to Weight Gain

Those who have tried the various weight loss programs but do not seem to lose that extra weight may be suffering from lack of sufficient iodine. Lack of iodine causes the body to produce fewer amounts of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which is produced by the thyroid glands and is essential for maintaining the body’s rate of metabolism. If levels of thyroxine are low, so will be your metabolism and your body will not burn through the calories you eat as efficiently. This slowing of the body’s process of burning excess fat is why iodine deficiency has been linked to weight gain.

Eating foods that are naturallyl high in iodine, such as kelp (shown here), helps to keep your thyroid and metabolism functioning properly.

Iodine deficiency will not only result to weight increase, but can lead to loss of hair, unhealthy teeth, and frequent feeling of tiredness among others. Therefore, taking food rich in iodine or iodine supplements will not only help one to reduce weight but will also be beneficial for the body. Thyroids that do not function properly will make the individual retain fat causing them to gain weight. The correlation between thyroid and weight gain was observed in patients who had their thyroid glands surgically removed. After a few days, it was noted that the individuals without the glands had gained extra weight.

Lack of thyroid hormones increases the chances of the body not to being able to convert body fat into energy and thus the fat is stored resulting to increase in body weight. Those with thyroid deficiency are advised to regularly consume foods that are rich in iodine. However, they should seek the advice of their physicians since they may end up taking too much iodine, which may cause various health complications. In addition to taking iodine, those who are dieting are advised not to ignore taking part in physical exercise activities. These exercises will enable the body to turn the remaining body fat into body muscles.

Some people ignore iodine since it forms only a small percentage of the minerals that the body needs. However, the thyroids glands will not be able to function optimally if the required level of iodine is not provided. This may lead to cases of weight gain and hypothyroidism; failing of the thyroid glands. The insufficient consumption of iodine may be because of wanting to eat healthy foods by reducing the intake of salt. Salt is rich in iodine and will help the body to produce the required levels of the thyroid hormones.

Apart from table salt, there are other types of food that one can be able to eat to ensure that the body receives the desired amounts of iodine. Such foods may include fish, yogurt, eggs, cow’s milk as well as fruits such as strawberries. One can also get iodine through food supplements. For those who prefer natural foods to supplements, kelp, which has high concentrations of iodine, can be used as a replacement for the supplements. However, individuals have to be disciplined for them to have a successful weight loss program. They have to make sure that the food eaten is well balanced and contains all the nutrients the body requires.
