Factors That Lead to Weight Gain as You Age

Weight Gain as You Age

It is not uncommon to experience weight gain as you age, but there are ways to combat it.

Weight gain as you age is something that can be controlled. Many people seem to think that weight gain as you age is inevitable, but it’s not. Weight gain primarily depends on your lifestyle and your diet. If you have been binge eating all your life, chances are that you’ll face health difficulties as your grow old, and you won’t be able to lose weight easily.

Although your weight can increase with age despite exercising or dieting, nobody should say that you can’t control it. Admittedly, though, a lot of things change as you tend to cross your 40s, and your diet is affected considerably. Even if you don’t eat that much food, you may well still have a pot belly by the time you reach 50 or 60.

Here are some factors that lead to weight gain as you age:

Aging Muscles

Basically, when people age they tend to lose muscle cells, which is a natural process. When you lose muscle cells at a young age, the cell repair is much quicker. But when the same happens to people at older ages, the process slows down. There are no theories as to why muscle cells damage as people get older.

Unhealthy Diet

If you have an unhealthy eating routine and you lose muscle cells, chances are that you will gain weight as you get older.

Increased Stress

Stress causes a number of health risks, and one of them is weight gain. High levels of stress can cause a person to indulge in emotional eating. To deal with stress, people often resort to eating a lot and drinking alcohol, both of which lead to weight gain. Many people in their middle age have to deal with a lot of work stress and difficult situations at home. Stress leads to obesity and various cardiovascular diseases.

No Exercise

Any form of exercise is essential to stay in shape. You don’t necessarily have to lift weights for this. If you don’t have the time to hit the gym, at least go for a brisk walk in the park or get a treadmill. Lack of exercise leads to weight gain. All of the sugar and carbohydrates you consume on a daily basis build fatty pockets inside of your body.

To avoid weight gain as you age, you have to follow a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive outlook on life–and then you will feel even younger than your years.
