Experts are warning about an app called Kurbo, which was introduced by WW (formerly Weight Watchers). The app is directed at children, including those as young as 8 years old! It basically rewards food restriction, and it showcases weight loss stories, complete with before and after photos of kids who have been able to shed pounds.
Why Dieting Apps for Kids Could Be Harmful
First off, kids go through a lot of bodily changes as they grow, and especially during puberty. You remember how insecure you were at that age, right? So, why would you want a child who is already dealing with enough to have an app that makes them feel even more insecure?
Experts are also warning that dieting apps for kids might encourage the development of eating disorders, particularly in those children who are already prone to them. For many people who end up with eating disorders while they are still kids, they continue dealing with the disorders into adulthood, so it’s best to establish a healthy relationship with food from a young age.
Dieting Apps Are a Big No-No for Kids
There are much better ways to help kids lose weight, and to help reduce the number of children who are overweight or obese.
