Rimonabant is a prescription weight loss drug that is quite different from many of the other medications that are currently available. It is the first among a type of pill called CB1 receptor blockers to have received approval anywhere around the globe for use in the effort to help to lose weight.

This drug received its approval in Europe under the brand name Acomplia, to be prescribed alongside a proper weight loss diet and exercise program for patients whose body mass index is greater than 30 (which means that they have more than 30 kilograms per square meter). It can also be prescribed among patients with a minimum BMI of 27 if their excess weight is also associated with additional risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia. In the United Kingdom, this pill was first approved for prescription use in July 2006.

Another use for Rimonabant could be in smoking cessation. There are studies currently being conducted – such as those by Sanofi-Aventis – that are working to determine the potential value of this drug for that purpose.

Rimonabant works differently from other prescription drugs that are available to obesity patients in the United States. It is called a cannabinoid receptor antagonist. This means that it functions by blocking off certain of the brain’s receptors as well as the fat tissues, which are known as CB1 receptors.

What this means is that this medication stops the natural cannabinoid level actions in the brain from being able to stimulate the CB1 receptors. The belief is that those are among the receptors that are responsible for producing the sensation of hunger. Therefore, by blocking them, it means that the desire to consume food is diminished. Hunger pangs shrink because the brain and fatty tissues responsible for that sensation experience altered communication.

The generic tablet of this pill is usually sold in round, white tablets that may be punched with “20” or scored in half. The most common dosage is 20mg. This tablet is meant to be swallowed whole without crushing, breaking, cutting, or chewing.

At the moment, this drug is not approved by the FDA. This means that any attempt by Americans to purchase it to be shipped to themselves for use in the country is considered to be illegal, even if it is bought from a country that has approved the drug.
